Wizbit, a distributed revisioning file system

Rob Taylor (Codethink Ltd)
Catwalk, Topaz Small

Wizbit is a GVFS-based file system that uses the git version control system and built-in metadata storage to provide a new distributed revisioning filesystem. Each file is identified by a globally unique identifier and filenames are just another item of metadata.

This talk will introduce the technology, issues faced and the possibilities this opens up for our user interface, for example:

  • Seamlessly sharing and editing files between multiple devices, even with only occasional connectivity
  • Off-line collaborative editing.
  • Allow files to be ‘just saved’, without the user choosing a location or name.
  • Different views onto your files. For example, by time or by subject.

Rob works in the embedded linux area, through his company Codethink Ltd. He’s been known to co-maintain the D-Bus GLib bingings and help make HAL suitable for embedded handheld systems. He was a cofounder of the Telepathy and Farsight projects, and still takes interest in the messaging, VoIP and collaborative technologies area.

He’s currently working on using D-Bus for assistive technologies, making Tinymail do some funky low-bandwidth low-latency things and some crack distributed revisioning file system ideas.
