Gnome usability:

What are the factors that increase gnome usability? What programs are most frequently used? What are the least user friendly programs? What features should be improved to get more users?

Looking at gnome in the following main sections:

Start Menus

File Management

Audio/video Players

OpenOffice

Update Utilities

Email clients

I have made a two types of surveys, a face-to-face and a witting-based one and have had a lot of different types of people taken (and are still taking) them. A pool of analytical data (which is still growing) have been made from those surveys and I have driven interesting charts and tables based on the results.

The results of these analysis have been compared with the data I have gathered from several other sources such as 2006 & 2007 Desktop Linux Survey Usability http://www.desktoplinux.com, HASE Human Aspects of Software Engineering Information System Department UMBC http://www.umbc.edu/ and Linux GUI Usability http://psicologia.unipd.it/htlab/284.php and a comparison statistics have been made.

I would like to share the final results with GNOME developers.

(I can squeeze it into a Lightning Talk)

I am a third year Computer Science student at McMaster University, graduating next summer.

I am a member of GNOME Foundation and have been using Gnome since 2004. I have participated in Guadec 2005, 2006 & 2007. & have helped in organization of Guadec 2006 (The booklet) & 2007 (The booklet and also the venue rooms schedules and filming)

This year I am submitting a paper to run a session on “Why don’t people use Gnome” & am going to claim the “Accessibility Documentation for Users and Developers” of “GNOME Outreach Program: Accessibility”.

As for organization, I will start building up the wikipage for Guaedc soon & am also a volunteer to help more on whatever that is needed once I am there.
